They say it ain’t over until the fat lady sings, but the soaring soulful sounds of “Divas at the Disco” signal shit is just getting started for Topaz Jones. The emcee comes correct on his latest release, tapping Chicago beatsmith Thelonious Martin for the instrumental. It’s hard not to let the beat capture your attention during the first listen, but make sure to run this track back a few times, or you might miss slick lines from Jones like:
"Pastor say, ‘If you can spend $300 on them tennis shoes / I’m guessing you can take that stack, put it to better use’ / Come on, man, you better get a clue / I’m betting you Jordan don’t give a damn what grade you get in school"
It’s clear that Topaz Jones has a message for those willing to lend an ear. And we’re definitely listening.
I got into music because I heard Dilla on Adult Swim, I’ve been producing for 5 years and now I can proudly announce that I can accomplish one of my life’s goals. When I got the news that I’m going to be the music behind the bumps I heard when I was younger that inspired me, hopefully some kid will be staying up late and hear my music like they heard Dilla’s and become inspired. #adultswim
